Clonalis House
Clonalis House in Castlerea, Co. Roscommon is the ancestral home of the O' Connors of Connacht. Please visit www.clonalishouse.com for more info.
What could be more inviting than a traditional cottage, glowing gently from within through its windows and doors to welcome you.
We recently undertook more renovation works at our cottages replacing 4 doors and in keeping with the character of the cottages we had traditional wooden bespoke doors made.
We love the charm of these tongue and groove panelled doors, half glazed with their green paint finish, in perfect harmony with the lush greenery that sounds the cottages. Such a delight to be able to walk out the door of your cottage and be greeted not by roads and busy commuters but trees and birdsong. The half cottage doors invite guests to let the cool summer breeze in. There's a quiet romance to our cottages that works its magic on visitors, whisking them away from the everyday....
We look forward to welcoming many more people through these doors in the years to come.

Living in an old house is an affair of the heart and the older the house the more in love you have to be.
There are uncertainties and architectural mysteries to be unravelled and interpreted and you can be certain that there will not be a straight line or a right angle.
A very old house makes very particular demands thus last year alongside every year since we returned home, we embarked on restoration works at Clonalis with craftsmen, the gatekeepers to valuable traditional skills of our past focusing on two very large chimneys above our entrance tower.
Living here is like being dropped in a pool of history that surrounds you and we feel lucky to have joined the people who have been sheltered by these heavy walls and hopefully there will be many more after us. Every generation has left its mark, even if only a little more wear on the scoop of a stone step or initials and dates scraped into lead or written behind wallpaper.
Like the layers of history in an old house the process of restoration is best described as “layers of stress and joy intermingled.” In truth the process is never entirely finished there is always a gutter to mend or another area to restore.
We are only passing through, a brief episode in the history of these venerable homes. The aim is to always leave them in better shape than we found them. And that is profoundly satisfying.

We are devastated to have lost many trees from Storm Éowyn, especially our beloved ancient, majestic trees that are irreplaceable. (Many trees in this photo have sadly been lost) It is said that the older the tree becomes, the more vital to wildlife it becomes.
Capturing the sense of the place is a personal perspective, a land that we have lovingly cultivated for hundreds of years by generations of our family. Our woodlands with their ancient stories etched in bark offer a sanctuary amidst the whispering leaves, the gentle rustle of the trees and a connection to the tranquillity of nature.
Yet, as the clean up after the storm continues for many months to come, we are heartened by the quiet promise of lengthening light breathing warmth, revival and possibility into the days ahead. You can sense it, can’t you? Smell it in the daffodils, hear it in the bird song from dawn to dusk and feel it in the quick temperature changes from biting chill to teasing warmth allowing us to pause, a moment to reset and reframe.

With restless branches shivering in the wind through a dim cloak of grey foggy skies the modest little snowdrop deserves more attention as they brighten up our winter and lift our spirits. Through sabres of sunlight, poking through cold earth they are joyful signs that nature is working its magic and Spring will come. They are a symbol of hope and a signal that winters icy grip on the land is loosening.

The first fall of snow is not only an event but it is a magical event. You go to bed in one kind of world and wake up to find yourself in another quite different, and if this is not enchantment, where is it to be found?

A little late but Happy New Years from all at Clonalis. We hope you had the joy and blessing of spending time with your nearest and dearest over Christmas. We hope you got to slow down and time was no longer measured but in the increasingly short intervals between mince pies gobbled and mugs of hot chocolate.
