Teach Chluain Mhalais

Teach Chluain Mhalais, An Caisleán Riabhach, Ros Comáin.

Our home, Clonalis House name originates from “Teach Chluain Mhalais” meaning “Meadow of the Forts”, our home town “An Caisleán Riabhach” meaning the grey or striped castle originates from the O’Conor Castle that once stood in Castlerea & was built upon when their land was granted to Captain Sandford in the 17th century in the aftermath of the Cromwellian War.

The unique historical importance of Clonalis does not lie in the 19th century when it was built but many centuries before. Like all homes, our home tells a story, a story like that of the Irish people that symbolises the spirit of endurance.

Buildings can hold history & a sense of place embedded within their walls; capturing local vernacular in bricks & mortar physically & literally. And I love that our home offers a visceral, tangible link to both, honouring its origins. The perfect words to capture the beauty, history, magic & our love for our home can sometimes hang elusively from me just within the shadows, waiting patiently to be chosen but I believe the simple nuanced beauty of its origins & our native language are a good place to start!

At hotels, you get a key to unlock your bedroom door, at Clonalis our Gaelic historic family home you get a key to unlock history.

We’ve got soul in our country pocket…..
